In her Art for Modern Architecture series Marine Hugonnier explores the nature of the relationship between text and image using newspapers and colored scraps of silk. Geometric patterns take the place of photographs on the front pages of newspapers, engaging the viewer’s memory and forcing it to create its own images, which can serve as a visual accompaniment to important historical and political events. The series uses clippings from the British newspaper The Guardian, covering the transition in Russia from the Gorbachev era to that of Boris Yeltsin.
The artist uses various techniques, including painting, collage, video, and photography. Her work explores the nature of the relationship between images and the corresponding historical, cultural and political events.
Hugonnier was born in Paris in 1969. She now lives and works in London.
